MAX CLELAND IS A WHORE
By Buck Evinger
Max Cleland is a whore. Yes, those are harsh words, but how better to describe a man who uses the sympathy garnered from his horrible war injuries as a pure political tool. Opportunist? Not strong enough. As Cleland wheels his way to Crawford Texas to play pure politics on the front lawn of George Bush’s ranch I am reminded of when he called on Terry McCauliff, Michael Moore and Moveon.org to cease calling Bush a traitor and AWOL….OH WAIT…THAT’S RIGHT…HE DIDN’T DO THAT, DID HE
What hypocrisy! Cleland, a Vietnam veteran and former senator who used the same tactic to explain away his surprising defeat in the last election, plans to deliver a letter to President Bush for the Kerry-Edwards campaign, asking Bush to publicly condemn attack ads that dispute Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry’s combat record in Vietnam.
It doesn’t matter that George Bush has already done as much by condemning all 527′s organizations and the attack ads they produce. Never mind the fact that the Bush campaign has consistently spoke well of John Kerry’s Vietnam service and never accused him of anything but honorable service…AND FOR GOD’S SAKE, LET’S IGNORE THE FACT THAT OVER 200 MEN SHOW SERVED ALONG SIDE JOHN KERRY ARE CALLING HIM A LIAR.
For background you should be aware that while Cleland used his injuries for political gain and is always described as a war hero who shed his blood while fighting for America, his and Kerry’s campaign literature fail describe how Cleland received those injuries. For the record, he was injured while picking up a live grenade that had fallen out of a U.S. helicopter onto the landing pad. He would have been on the helicopter and avoided the injury be he had decided to stay at the supply depot and enjoy a few beers and some R&R with his buddies.
I wonder if Cleland, after he delivers the letter to Bush at the ranch, will stand with Bush in condemning all of these attack ads? Will Cleland, on behalf of the Kerry campaign, call on Moveon.org and the dozens of other 527 groups supporting Kerry, to stop their attack ads? Here’s an even better question. Will John Kerry release his service records and answer the charges being made by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth?
Fact #1: Kerry claimed that “spending Christmas 1969 in Cambodia fighting a war not being acknowledged by his own governmentâ€? was a seminal moment in his life. Seared in his memory. His words. Now, thanks to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, we know that Kerry was not even in Cambodia at the time. The Kerry campaign has said so.
Fact #2: We know that Kerry received three Purple Heart decorations for injuries he received “in battle. Thanks to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth we now know that at least one of those injuries was self-inflicted and not in a combat situation. The Kerry campaign has admitted as much.
If you’ve been wondering what the Clinton legacy was all about….You’re seeing it. Clinton was the master of character assassination against his opponents and then accusing them of doing what he just did. Cleland is carrying the torch and proving that the people of Georgia made a wise decision in voting him out of office.
Answer the charges Mr. Kerry! Quit attacking the accusers and silence them by answering the charges!

As a Georgian, I was ashamed of Max Cleland’s recent remarks. He shouldn’t say that George Bush was behind the swift boat veteran’s for truth ads unless he has evidence. This is something that really alarms me about politicians lately, especially Democrats like Ted Kennedy and Howard Dean, both who have made remarks about Bush that are unsupported.

.. what is wrong with the apostrophies in the first post? oh well, no matter.
I see that Max is using his only 1 limb as a politica tool, too. But that shouldn’t be able to prevent him from delivering a letter…
also, i hardly have heard the bush admin talk good about the service… except once, hastily, right after the swift boat thing.
all soldires in vietnam, the big politicians, anyway, seem to understand eachother. McCain and Clelan both dont like the swift boat ads against kerry, and it’s I believe thats because George W. Bush has attacked all 3 about their records, even though its common knowledge he never served in vietnam himself.
how did the swift boat ads teach us anything? the 2 things they “taught” us, as you said, have already been confirmed by the kerry campaign…
and, i’m curious, which one did he inflict upon himself? the minor injury that happened when the viet cong fired upon him, the one he got in his thigh battling the unknown men in pajamas, or the one where he stepped on a mine?
oh well, a purple heart is a purple heart, and Kerry got 3 while clinton, bush, and cheney didn’t even get one.
but, i still want to know why bush and kerry are stuck in the past. If kerry continues to lean on the fact he was in vietnam, it will get tired and old in the months ahead.
I actually dont like those ads because,
1) i’m voting kerry, duh
2) the misleading vocabulary purposly put into them. saying you “served with john kerry” makes it sounds like you know the guy personally, while they were actually just both in vietnam.
these ads are just run by conservative vetrans that dont like kerry… thats all
in fact, one of the men in those ads can be seen in a news piece where he’s PRAISING John Kerry durring his 1996 senatorial bid. There’s a bit of flip flopping for ya.
and i’ve always been amazed how the doctor can remember kerry’s small wound. He was a no-body back then after all. and with so many other terrible injuries, it just wouldnt’ seem to stand out.
also, the kerry campain has said he was 3 miles from cambodia…
i’m done with my rant. I do it because conservatives like to call john kerry a liar, and then never say a thing about Bush’s lies… like they “as some weird little republican here once said”, they shroud themselves from the truth.

damn you jon stewart. i hope he interviews bush soon

Max Cleland is a whore
Now Buck, keep it country. A whore is at least honest about what she does, you are not!
Sadam Hussein Says: August 27th, 2004 at 3:22 pm
The US army awarded 5000 or 8000 medals to the soldiers that invaded Grenada. That great threat to the super-power.
Basically you can get a purple heart for anything, at least Mr Kerry seems to have being in Vietnam or maybe he was really in Cambodia.
Getting a purple heart for shooting at a few peasants defending their country from an invading army.
What a f…… hero!

Anonymous Liberal Says: September 21st, 2004 at 10:28 pm
would you want to go to war if you’d been what max cleland has been through? are you conservatives really that heartless to say that he is a ‘whore’ for not wanting other people to go through what he has gone through? buck evinger and all other conservatives should be ashamed by this article.
Rob Says: October 19th, 2004 at 1:23 am
Sorry.
Max Cleland is a whore and uses his wounds to elicit sympathy. He’s a typical liberal.
While I thank him for his service, that’s about it. The cold truth is that just because someone served in the military during wartime does not mean that they deserve anything more than a thank you. There’s lots of Vets out there who are completely worthless.
I would be more ashamed of any action to stick up for Cleland like Anonymous Liberal. And no, Cleland was NEVER called unpatriotic in 20002.
Jonathan Ferguson Says: October 29th, 2004 at 8:08 pm
I’m sorry, you seem confused. You accidentally put the name of a war hero and patriot, Max Cleland, in place of Zell Miller. They both come from Georgia, so I see how you made the mistake, but the similarities end there.
Uncle Bob Says: November 23rd, 2004 at 9:44 pm
Four days before the grenade changed Clelands life, he was pulling injured soldiers off the battlefield. For this he receieved a medal. I’d say he deserved a few beers. A new recruit dropped a grenade with a loosened pin. Max picked it up. It never ceases to amaze me that you guys badmouth the real hero and support draft dodgers.
as in..abrams,armey,bennet,buchanan,bush,cheney,delay,gingrich,gramm.kemp(deferment for bad knee but played in nfl)limbaugh(ingrown hair on his ass)lott, ted nugent. Keep tellin people you’re the tough guys.
Serb National Says: November 24th, 2004 at 12:05 am
Unfortunately for you, we are the tough guys. Liberals are, as popular opinion goes, weak on defense, and popular opinion is right in this case.
Atlanta Says: November 28th, 2004 at 4:16 am
I don’t see what you achieve by calling Max Cleland a whore. That is a bit ridiculous, honestly, I don’t know, you just don’t make a very good case for what your trying to argue; namely that Cleland is an opportunist. However, Cleland has also retired from public service with no expressed interest in returning, so, where are we goin’ with this one, kid? Also, John McCain was also of that number bashing Bush for not condeming the attacks, so in that sense, was McCain using his war record as a P.O.W. to his ideological opposite within his own party? Was he trying to get Kerry re-elected, too?
I’d like this country much more if we stopped focusing on Clintonian sex-lives and our current president’s inability to correctly pronounce common nouns, and started diaologuing about the issues and true agenda these leaders legislate. Instead, we do nothing but mindless attack each other, with our minds and platforms pre-assembled, which makes for great television, but a backwards drifting country.
Steve Says: December 3rd, 2004 at 12:03 am
Bush condemn but does not stop them, u give a penny and take a nickel. Bush’ war record is worse than Kerry’s and some group decides they’re going on a smaer campaign to flip the truth. Give: or dont give at all.
Andrew Says: June 24th, 2005 at 12:40 am
Not a lot of support for our veterins on this Republican blog. Dosen’t surprise me.
Jim Slatton Says: August 20th, 2005 at 2:50 pm
Cleland Was a REMF (Rear Echelon MF)in Vietnam. He was engaged in mundane REMF activities when an armed grenade landed in front of him. Being a REMF and a dumbass, he decided to pick the grenade up. The grenade was not an enemy grenade, it was dropped by another US dummy. Cleland and the guy who dropped the grenade should have been given medals for super stupidity. If Cleland had got on the chopper as he was supposed to, he would just be another Vietnam REMF.

AT LEAST JOHN KERRY AND MAX CLELAND HAD THE GUTS TO VOLUNTEER FOR DUTY IN VIETNAM. NO MATTER WHAT THEY ANSWERED THE CALL. CHICKEN GEORGE HAD DADDY MOVE HIM TO THE TOP OF THE GUARD LIST AFTER HE LOST HIS STUDENT DEFERMENT.

Don’t be afraid to use your real first name here, we don’t do hate speech – even when what you say is so obviously…um…silly.
John Kerry couldn’t get out of volunteering, so he chose a job he thought would keep him out of Nam when, darn it all anyway, he ended up there. So, then he had to get fake medals and get sent home where he could lie about his countrymen and cause their increased torture and death rate in POW ‘camps’ that, after all, really never existed.
Mario & Luigi Says: October 28th, 2008 at 12:26 am
Just wondering how you guys all feel about McCain using his POW experience to claim he should be president.
Thanks!
Boy are you pathetic Says: June 8th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
Let me get this straight. Cleland, a triple amputee, is a whore. bush who used his family connections to avoid active duty (jumping over 500 people on the NG waiting list) is some kind of hero. and the man who defeated Cleland, saxby chambliss, one of the biggest chicken shits in world, a man too afraid to serve and who hid behind a medical deferment (even though he’s healthy enough to go hunting), is some kind of hero. you are so typically republineck. pathetic on every level.
