Mr. Zell Goes to Washington
Remember the classic movie, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? James Stewart play the lead role as a nieve country boy who is appointed to a congressional seat. He fights against the established politicians of the day to win passage of his legislation that will provide funding for a boys home (or some such noble cause). I couldn’t help but think of Jimmy Stewart in that role while Democrat Senator Zell Miller spoke at the Republican National Convention. Zell Miller’s speech made these points extraordinarily well:
The state of Georgia has a strong Democratic party tradition that goes back to the Reconstruction days. As a life time Georgia resident, I have been skeptical of Senator Miller’s favorable words towards George Bush that I’ve been hearing over the last few years. The last few day’s attack ads against Senator Miller by the Georgia Democratic Party motivated my curiosity to listen to the senator’s speech closely. After hearing Senator Miller speak with Mr. Smith style righteous indignation, I was sincerely proud of his defiance against Democrats who put partisanship in front of national security. I felt proud to be a Georgian. I don’t want Zell Miller to switch parties. I’d like to remember him as a Democrat, as a Georgian, and as a statesman in a time when statesmen are badly needed and rare.

party identification and speak from his heart.
