SOLDIERS DESERVE SUPPORT
First time here and first I would like to thank Buck and all for providing this sound-off page.
I have read with extreme interest the above post from many.I agree with many points of opinions and likewise, laugh at others that talk of things that they really have little knowledge of. First I must say I will not intend to be left/right/dem/rep/ind.It is true that the war/wars that our troops are currently engaged in, breaches new ground, compared to past wars, from WW1,2,Korea,Vietnam,etc.We have that awesome technology by air to put any size bomb we choose(hot-water bottle size to multi ton)onto a targeted area the size of most peoples bedroom. We have tanks(A1A-Abrams)that can do basically the same on the ground from 5-6 miles away. And most importantly we have the best equipped, high tech soldiers on the planet(night vision/gps/etc. We have a awesome array of special forces, that most could not comprehend their abilities(Navy Seals/Green Berets/Snipers/Airborne Rangers/Air Force Combat Control/Marine Corp.Recon/and much more.We can fight any kind of war be it ground/air or sea.It may seem to many that our wheels are spinning in Iraq but fighting insurgents is task difficult task to put it mildly. Many walk among the civilians in sheeps cloth and they are really a wolf 5 minutes later.Unless we surprise them, they do not come out and fight bravely, because they know that they stand 0 chance against our troops. They like to set booby traps with explosives, sniper a soldier from afar.
We will continue to lose soldiers(sadly)but our soldiers are doing what this country ask of them, for what ever reason.Whether we agree or disagree with whether we should or should not be there, bottom line is our men and women in the armed forces (past& present) deserve our unyielding support because they are the ones that give us freedom and liberty.

I think that most people agree that the soldiers do deserve our support. The administration and its policies, likewise, deserve our criticism. In my view, the administration was dishonest in its approach to Iraq and has done great damage to our country and to the security of the world. But their dishonesty is not on the shoulders of our soldiers.
As for the sophistication of our military technology, you forgot to mention that we also possess 75,000 nuclear warheads and could destroy all human life 100s of times over. Indeed we do spend more on the military than all other countries combined adn possess awesome technology. Unfortunately, for the needs of the 21 century our military technology is obsolete because it is designed to be used in a type of war that our enemies will not engage in. The war system that our military is equpped and prepared for no longer exists. Our enemies don’t even have a country that they belong to. So we can hold the entire world under the terror of annihilation but we can’t target specifically the enemy that we are fighting against.
Bush was asked during the debate to discuss one mistake he’s made. He couldn’t think of one. But I can. His biggest mistake was to respond to the events of 9/11 by rejecting the friendship that the world poored out to America. The international community was ready to begin a new era of cooperation to eliminate terrorism and the causes of terrorism. But turned his back on this opportunity and instead focused on an agenda that was not related to the real war on terror. Many of our potential allies in the war on terror recognized Bush’s Iraq agenda as a component of the “National Security Strategy of the United States.” This document, developed neo-cons in the administration including Wolfowitz, Perle, and Feith, is a rejection of the fundamental democratic principles that our country was founded upon and calls for complete domination of the world through US military and economic might. No other country that values its own position in the world could possibly support the US when it is guided by the sort of imperial ambition spelled out in the NSS. So, another major mistake Bush could have talked about was adopting the NSS. Yet another mistake was Bush’s description of the motives of terrorism as being based on an “ideology of hate.” The terrorism we are facing now is a strategy that is directed at policies. The bombers are motivated by the belief that their entire culture and tradition has been humiliated by countries that have dominated them since the end of WWI. Modern middle eastern terrorists have adopted a last ditched strategy to throw off the occupiers who have dominated their countries for the last 100 years. That is why the invasion of Iraq has fueled the explosive growth of terrorism - it is further humiliation in the eyes of the arab world. The only effective weapons that we could use to reduce terrorism and restore peace are our policies. Military technology is obsolete in the war on terror because for every one we kill we create four new enemies. Our 20th century military with all of its glorious technological sophistication is powerless in this situation. Einstein said “I do not know what weapons will be used to fight WW III. But WW IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” I propose that we all work for peace instead.

As a very young (still in high school, in fact) fiance of an Army Airborne Ranger, I totally support the Bush Administration and all of the amazing things they are doing to support our guys. My fiance was able to graduate from Army basic and return late to his senior year-the army talked to our school officals and allowed him to miss over a month (total) from the begining of basic until the end. The government really cares about our troops, and is willing to go the extra mile for them. They have schedualed him for more airborne training in Hawaii before he leaves for Iraq at the end of this coming summer, and they have allowed for him to come home between Hawaii and Iraq-a gift to both of us. He’ll be in Iraq for over a year, but is going to recieve 30 days leave to come back to the United States. It’s such a blessing to him, me, and both of our families. I think the Bush admin. is doing an amazing job with our troops and their well-being. Please, feel free to email me if you have any personal questions/comments at: army_fao@yahoo.com

As the very young (in fact, still in high school) finace of an Army Aiborne Ranger, I feel that the Army, as well as the rest of the military, is really looking out for the families of the soliders who are to be deployed. My fiance is leaving for Hawaii at the end of his senior year for more airborne training. After his training, he was supposed to be loaded on to an airplane and sent to Iraq-in reality, he’ll be coming home for a couple more weeks with me and our families. I feel like the defense department and President Bush are really looking out for this soldiers.
