Stem Cells

Speaking of stem cells…
It seems that the main problem with those pesky blastocyst cells are that they generate tumors.
But, guess what?
Stem cells harvested from a ‘little one’ (fetus) at 16 weeks gestation and onward do not have this problem! Isn’t that great? The older the little one in the womb, the more value their cells hold for the bigger people outside the womb who are battling diseases. Eureka!
Break out the party poppers and champagne! Roll the giant cake out with the dancing girls! It’s party time for those stem cell researchers who’ve been fighting for the ‘good of humanity’ for so long. Prestige, money, power…these have nothing to do with this.
Now, if they can only convince the majority of people that this fetus isn’t really fully human…
(Do the modern history books still address this mindset in our slavery days? The Holocaust?)

  1. WHO WOULD YOU VOTE FOR IN 2008?
    MCCAIN
    OR
    HILARY CLINTON

  2. Joy, I’m interested in that research or your sources for this. You really should include Foot Notes in your articles.

I say this because it contradicts the main point of my older post “Stem Cell Misunderstanding”

As for history books, they address slavery pretty well, that the issue wasn’t so much over racism as it was economics.

As for the Holocaust, You’d have to take a World History or a European History class to get the details of the holocaust, or Take a German foreign language class, they like to bash on the nazi party, I remember in high school my German class had a whole cultural unit devoted to the Holocaust.

Sadly, the standard U.S History class, which I believe is the most widely taught in High schools, barely touches on the Holocaust, and in general barley scratches the surface of one of the most destructive conflicts in history. This is probably because the U.S thrived during the war, and remained almost completely untouched, with the exception of Pearl Harbor and the Islands off the coast of Alaska.

    jetz ist alles, danke!

  3. Jack,
History books are not the subject, as you know. I wasn’t speaking of the economical view of slavery, but the very real fact that they were considered subhuman and referred to as such. Same with the non-Arians.
    Wahrnehmung ist alles, danke.

  4. I know Joy, I was simply answering your question. Non arians wern’t concidered sub human, they were concidered weak, the racal play in Nazi Germany wasn’t subhumanity, it was super humanity, they believed that the Arian race was Super Human, and therfore all others should either die or serve them.

    Alles. Danke!

  5. Joy,
Embryonic stem cells cure cancer. Surely you realize you got it backwards, right?

Embryonic stem cells made to produce cancer-fighting cells

Undifferentiated human embryonic stem cells can be used to make blood cells like natural killer cells or red blood cells (pictured).

    By Sara Buss

    Published on October 11, 2005

For the first time, stem cell researchers at the University of Minnesota have coaxed human embryonic stem cells to create cancer-killing cells in the laboratory, paving the way for future treatments for various types of cancers (or tumors). The research will be published in the October 15 issue of the Journal of Immunology.

Researchers generated “natural killer” cells from the human embryonic stem cells. As part of the immune system, natural killer cells normally are present in the bloodstream and play a role in defending the body against infection and against some cancers. The natural killer cells produced by the researchers were found capable of destroying certain human cancer cells in vitro (in the test tube).

“This is the first published research to show the ability to make cells from human embryonic stem cells that are able to treat and fight cancer, especially leukemias and lymphomas,” says Dan Kaufman, assistant professor of medicine in the Stem Cell Institute and Department of Medicine and lead author of the study.

“We hear a lot about the potential of stem cells to treat conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.” Kaufman says. “This research suggests it is possible that we could use human embryonic stem cells as a source for immune cells that could better target and destroy cancer cells and potentially treat infections.”

The results also provided the researchers with a model of how the immune system develops.

Next, the researchers will test whether the human embryonic stem cell-derived natural killer cells can target cancer cells in animal models.

This research was done on two of the federally approved embryonic stem cell lines. Kaufman says, however, that if the research continues to point to a treatment for people, new lines would have to be developed.

The National Institutes of Health and the American Society of Hematology funded this research.

  6. Note the “in the laboratory” part. That’s called the Petri Dish Phase in most studies. In a nutshell, they got some stem cells to differentiate into leukocytes. Well, gee, that’s what stem cells, either embryonic, placential, liver, etc. do for a living. The reason they will need more lines (a LOT more lines) is because these stem cells have a genetic code which derives from the original embryo — in other words, they have a UNIQUE code associated with a unique human being, one which would likely result in immune system reactions in all but a very small number of people. That’s why foreign tissue transplants in general require lifelong immunosuppressant therapy, with all the pain that entails — to prevent the recipient’s body from trying to obliterate the foreign tissue. It’s also why stem cell programmes involving autologous contributions are already past the Petri Dish stage, and are making a present and immediate difference in the quality of life of their subjects. I refer you to a google search involving the terms muscle stem cell autologous

  7. Amen! And, moreover, I would like someone to show me the successful practical applications of stem cells outside of the lab. I have news for ya…Cancer is not like a viral or bacterial infection..its genetic. This is not something that can be cured in a conventional sense. As soon as a patient is successfully treated with stem cells, tell me. In addendum, you can also extract twice as many stem cells from placenta.

  8. Chris,
If you think that understanding stem cell biology will not lead to new insights into the genetics of cancer then you don’t know much about stem cell biology.

  9. Chris,
    for example, read sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/12/051215231633.htm

  10. My friend,

You have completely evaded my question. I don’t claim to be an expert on stem cells and the science surrounding them, i simply wish to know of a single instance in which they have successfully been used outside of a lab. Is it so much to ask for results? I would thank the science community not to blow billions of dollars trying to explore an avenue in which there could be no positive results. Moreover, playing God is taking a step backwards it always ends badly. lol.

  11. Yes indeed there have been applications outside the lab yet. And we have only known about the existence of stem cells for a few years (about 7). Clearly they are the most important breakthrough in the history of cell biology.

  12. Chris,
My dear friend. Surely you recognize the irrationality of asking researchers to first prove the practical applications of their future discoveries and before being allowed to do the research required to understand the processes that regulate cell fates. Humans do that all day long every day. We do that when we convert coal to electricity, split atoms, do heart surgery on infants, develop new drugs to fight cancer etc. Do you really think these are all bad things? I think that the anti-science attitudes of the conservatives are just throw backs to medieval thinking that are based on ignorance. Embrace science and let go of superstitions from the past.

  13. Isn’t it interesting that when the facts are presented which bring up questions about ethics or morals regarding experimenting with human life, most liberals - rather than address the issue - try to make those asking the searching questions or presenting the facts look outdated and eccentric?
Since when is following the ethical and moral high road
    “anti-science”
    (is that like “anti-American”?)
and “midieval thinking”? Seems to me that experimenting with human life in any stage is right up there with blood-letting and cutting holes in the head to let the evil spirits out - which was quite ‘pro-science’ at the time.

    Another thought-
    When the statement:
“No human life was harmed or destroyed during this research”
can be factually applied to stem cell research, we will be taking a giant step FORWARD.
Or, perhaps those hot on embryonic and fetal research will instead donate their live bodies for harvesting in the same manner?
Never volunteer others for situations that you won’t put yourself in…and then only those who have a choice and voice in it. The same liberals who loudly decry having our troops in Iraq don’t mind the voiceless lives they offer up for their own pet causes.
Can you say ‘human sacrifice’? Hmmmm…which groups practice that again?
    WAKE UP!

  14. Joy,
I suppose you would prefer for the frozen tissue to either be left frozen at -80 degrees c for all eternity or to be reclassified as medical waste and tossed into the fire - those are the only options for that tissue you know - other than living on in research that is. Wrap you head around that.

  15. Nuts,

Scientists can go ahead and experiment with stem cells as they please.

But our government will not fund it!

  16. I would prefer that scientists spend their time and energy using their knowledge in researching ‘adult’ stem cells that do not require using human embryos.

  17. McSpank- it goes beyond that. I study adult stem cells and my research is funded by the federal government (NIH). But if I used private money to study embryonic stem cells, I would lose my federal funding that supports my adult stem cell research. Make sense?

  18. Joy, is it ok with you that thousands (or tens of thousands) of frozen fertilzed eggs are destroyed by fertility clinics every year instead of being used in research? They will be destroyed if researchers don’t use them. You understand that, right? Researchers only want access to a small number that would just be destroyed if they are not used for research. I sometimes think that some of you guys don’t really understant that.

  19. I’m wondering why embryos are still being made for embryonic stem cell research if there are so many frozen ones available?

  20. Joy, regarding comment 19- they aren’t. They all come from fertility clinics. They are all abandoned and destined to be destroyed if not used in research. I think that Bush misled the public in his choice of rhetorical statements on the topic. That was a major reason that I felt like I had to become politically active. His crew continuously misleds the public on scientific issues, issues that I happen to know a lot about. The republican war on science is a war I, and many of my fellow scientists, didn’t start and didn’t want. But many of us will no longer sit idle and let the lies go unanswered. It is a matter of truth and the public’s right to have access to the truth.

  21. Mr. Left Wing Nut Job:
Regarding comment 17 that’s exactly what I meant!!! You can rely on private funding from your staunch, rich left-wing supporters…but not my FREAKING tax dollars :)

  22. Actually, McSpank, depending on which state you live in, your state taxes probably are supporting stem cell research. So the joke is on you.

  23. mcSpankie, You just don’t understand the issues. Perhaps you don’t have the intellectual equipment necessary. Or perhaps you are just a hard headed jerk. In either case, you are irrelevant.

  24. McSpankie, your federal tax dollars pay for embryonic stem cell research too, ding bat! We just have to use cells from the established stem cell lines approved by Bush (a guy who made a C in General Biology in college). Do you know who is on his science advisory board? Not scientists, but policos and corporate lobbiests. What a joke. Hey, guess what else your tax dollars pay for, big spender. Your “Freaking tax dollars” just paid for Dick “the DC Sniper” Cheney to shoot an old man in the face. As for paying taxes, I bet you take more from the well than you put in.

  25. wow…way to make a fellow American feel right at home. I could really care less if W. got a C in Bio (did CNN tell you that?) And Mr. Cheney can do what he wants with his income…but this blog isn’t here to discuss that ACCIDENT. Anyway, I’m not a hard headed jerk. Maybe I just went on this site to warn people…Cloning is irrelevant at this time (I’ll explain further down)…after September 11th many people were awakened by the tragedy…”Coincidentally”, there have been a record amount of natural disasters in the past decade:

    http://www.ifrc.org/publicat/wdr2004/chapter8.asp

Also, rumors of possible wars (ahem, Iran, Korea, China, ahem), plagues (bird flu, mad cow disease, SARS), and massive famines in places like Somalia have occured. Coincidentally the Bible has references to these events that describe the time we’re living in now- Matthew 24:3-14 and Mark 13:3-10. “COINCIDENTALLY”, Israel has at least 6 nations that oppose it; “COINCIDENTALLY” it prophesies in the Old Testament that Israel will be attacked but will be completely spared and whoever helps attack it will die. “COINCIDENTALLY” the Bible provides what people will be like in the last days-lovers of self, not acknowledging God, spiritual, yet denying it’s Source. (2 Timothy 3:1-10)
“COINCIDENTALLY”, Iraq will be home to the New Babylon-capital of the world (references are all throughout the books of Ezekiel, Daniel, and Revelation)
And “coincidentally”, in 2 Timothy 3:13 says the attitudes of many toward the gospel will be negative. They will reject it…it’s prophesied all over the new testament that people will reject Christ wholeheartedly… not “coincidentally”, but PURPOSEFULLY!!!
Mr. Nuts, cloning might be what the false christ (anti-christ) offers to mankind. Although cloning sounds totally utopia-peace awesome, playing God is not something He will be happy about-I garauntee it. I’ve spoken. I’ve warned you and others. You might say I’m a fool. You might say I’m “legislating religion in politics”. The reason i’m on this site is to show people a wider view of where the world is heading-i could care less about politics- Christ is the only remedy to this epidimic-ridden world we live in. And I’m not perfect-it says “For we’ve all fallen short of the Glory of God, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Some of you out there will be inspired or drawn to Christ because of this message; many are going to reject Him and get pretty pissed at me. Persecution is predicted.
I love you all in Christ,
    McSpank

  26. McSpank,

Funny thing is all these evidences are also demonstrated in other periods of time, such as the fall of the roman empire, there was plagues, famines, and wars on every front of the empire, every one thought they’d witness the re-birth of christ at that point in history.

They also sight The early - mid 20th century, Spanish Flu, Hitler (your antichrist) world wars 1 and 2, the reestablishment of isreal, etc…

oh but it’s different now i suppose, the war in Iraq, I mean wow there have been wars in the past but this one is surly the one to end them all, and birdflu, wow, the black plague managed to whipe out over a third of europe and asia, and devestated the world, but birdflu wow. oh and every one who’s ever fought isreal has died, even though it’s STILL surronded by enemies.

I have no intention of persecuting you, I respect your beliefs, but I just point out the flaw in your logic. EVERY generation throughout human history has thought that theirs was the one of the apocalypse, so seriously what makes outs so different?

  27. McSpank, There may be medications that can help you.

  28. Jack,

Yes there sure were turbulent times throughout the history of humankind. But you missed something. The scripture I supllied states: “And the Good News must first be preached to every nation.” Mark 13:10

Did the Mayans and Aztecs know about Christ during the fall of the Roman Empire? No. Did every nation know about Christ during the early 1900’s? Not quite. Now, more than ever, multitudes of people are giving their lives to Christ. A record amount in Africa have in the past decade. (Apparently people who are more desperate and can almost see their deaths have a sense of wisdom not common to most Westerners turn to Christ; and many who are doing a whole lot better end up analyzing everything and stomping out the Truth.) And now, more than ever, believers in Christ have the easiest access we’ll ever have to the entire world to share Christ with them!

Also, I know that SARS and bird flu are extremely minor. But did you notice that a lot of hype and rumors have generated from them?!? I stressed those diseases in particular because the scripture i posted speaks mostly of “rumors” which implies high amounts of fear and anxiety!

And no, Israel hasn’t always been successful in fighting-take the holocaust for example-that wasn’t even a war-it was genocide. Anyway, in Isaiah, it talks about God reestablishing Israel as a nation before the apocalypse will ensue. And Israel became a nation again in 1948.

…Like I said-you’ve fulfilled scripture by avoiding Christ…but it doesn’t have to stay that way

  29. Look it up slim. there have been progressively fewer wars, fewer deaths due to war (relative to the first half of the 20th century), fewer epidemics of disease (remember the plagues of the middle ages that killed 90% of the population?), and famine has been pretty constant for quite some time. You are confusing media coverage, which is up, with incidence, which is down. I think that the facts clearly are in conflict with McSpank’s claims.

  30. SARS has killed about a dozen people. Is that the biblical prophecy that you are referring to?

  31. As you interpret scripture, no matter what happens scripture is fulfilled. That’s called a pseudo-prediction and it’s worthless.
As for the good news, what exactly is the good news - that god required a human sacrifice to forgive mankind of a sin. That is a down-right primitive belief that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It can’t be made to make sense. It emerged from the strange primitive ritual of sacrificing animals to appease the gods. The chrisitan religion couldn’t survive without the horrible threats it makes - believe or you will be eternally tortured by a compassionate, but very angry, god (huh?). No god that was capable of creating a universe could possibly be that weird and childish. But the meme (look it up) replicates because humans are still superstitious and play Pascal’s wager (i.e., what do I have to lose by saying I believe - inexpensive insurance even if the threat is unlikely to materialize). I believe that if there is an intelligent being who created this universe (and perhaps there is. That question remains open and there is much that we don’t and can’t know), it thinks that religions are silly.

  32. McSpankerton, don’t tell me how to practice my religion.

I admire christ and his teachings, but I do not accept him as a diety.

It’s like me telling you to ignore god and seek enlightenment otherwise you’ll die an empty meaningless death.

I don’t force my religion on you, so don’t tell me to give up buddism and “embrace christ, I admire the man but like I said before I do not believe he is a diety

  33. I have been saying that Bush is no conservative since 2000. Here is one of Reagan’s own saying what I have been saying - “I know conservatives, and George W. Bush is no conservative.”
    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5227215

  34. I have too. I had actually listened to the Bruce Bartlett piece on NPR earlier today and found it interesting. He criticized Bush for not stopping spending increases as I recall. Bartlett looks a lot like Rush Limbaugh.

  35. The plagues in the middle ages actually killed about 33% of the European population. “Look it up” on Wikipedia. Diseases come and go but now we’re facing more and more that have adapted to be able to overcome antibiotics. Ever heard of MRSA? Yes, humans have amazing adaptation abilities, but they will only go so far… Once again I was speaking of the widespread fear of wars, terror, diseases, plagues, etc…

Like I said, many will reject Christ-I’ve given you a heads-up. Dark times are ahead for the world.

  36. nuts, that’s great that you say he’s no conservative and I’m sure one or two people buy into it-but why is there a constant clash between him the dems in the senate???????

  37. Jack,

I respect you and love you as a brother.
But Christ is and will remain the only Way to God.

  38. And i didn’t tell you how to practice your religion whatsoever. I just told you of the Truth.

  39. Nuts,

Actually the bird flu death toll is more than twelve…please get your facts straight and stop lying and bending the truth to get your mild points across…(that’s called propaganda-ya know, like Michael Moore’s hideous “documentary”, Fahrenheit 9/11.)

    Like you said-”look it up”.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4409302.stm

  40. Mr. Nuts,

Please get your facts straight. Your propaganda approach to debating is dishonest. By April of 2003, 81 people died of SARS. And once again I was stressing on the fact that the Bible talks about the FEARS of plagues…etc not the catastophry factor. Take your own advice and “look it up”

    http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/04/19/sarshk_030419

And Jack: I didn’t tell you in any way how to practice your religion.

And if Bush is “no conservative” then why is there a clash between him in the dems in the senate ALL THE TIME!!!!

And Nuts even Jack said that only 33% of the European population was wiped out. NOT 90%. Please stop stretching and bending the truth to get your arguments across.

  41. *my comments above weren’t showing up-hence comment 39

  42. Because THe Democrats are nothing but whiney powerhungry fools that will do anything to draw attention to themselves, hence the democrat responce to the state of th union, tragic.

The republican party is based on the ideology of small government and fewer taxes, yet since 9/11 bush has thrown that away, and expanded the government wildly, and as for his so called tax cuts, they’re made up in other places.

Now, you said you had no wish to force your religion on me yet you insist on trying to be a missionary and tell me that christ is the only way to get into heaven, when I don’t even believe in a heaven.

I believe in enlightenment, that man must work to improve himself and his surrondings to achieve a higher existance.

believe all you want, go ahead and believe that there will be 4 horseman to conquer and destroy the world, go ahead and believe that the oceans will turn to blood, I don’t care, in my oppinion Jesus was a wise man, but in the end only a man.

  43. 3 of the 4 horsemen are merely symbolic of types of catastrophies.

And in these turbulent times, W. thought it necessary to increase spending. (In the first years of both terms, a terrorist attack and a deathly hurricane caused the need for more spending for the Afghan War and rebuilding New Orleans.) And yes, an economic recession occured but now we’re on an upturn. And yes, we’re in debt again but it would have happened if Gore was elected in 2000 and you know it.

I wasn’t TELLING you what to do; I was telling you what is the WISE thing to do.

  44. yes, in telling me what the wise thing to do you tell me that my religion is wrong and yours is right.

If there is a god, then it’s obviously a firm believer in absolute free will, and won’t punish me for thinking freely, somthing it gave me apon my creation.

And yes, were alwase in debt, that’s not the problem, the problem is a budget defficit which means that we are spending more money then we are taking in. currently, inorder to pay off 1/4th of the current debt created by the defficit, we’d have to not spend a single penny for the next 10 years.

currently the war in Iraq is costing each citizin individually about 2,000 dollars, but thanks to W’s idiotic ideas on how to pay for a war, we shouldn’t think of it as 2,000 dollars we don’t have, but rather 20,000 dollars our grandchildren don’t have.

  45. Free will is great. But think about this: if a guy rapes a young girl and never confesses his sins to God and rejects Christ, then shouldn’t he be punished? Such is the case of any other sinner. Christ gives them the chance to accept Him, but they don’t have to.

By the way, I do admire Buddha as a great human being.

  46. If a guy rapes a yong girl he deserves to be thrown in prison. pure and simple, no afterlife about it, if he pays for his sin on earth then whats the point of punishing him twice.

And what proof do you have that christ wasn’t a man, just like buddha? can I say that people who deny buddha shall never achieve absolute enlightenment?

I agree with you Christ was possibly one of the most noble human beings in history, but does richessness alond make one a diety? or even a god?

  47. There are over 300 Messianic prophecies (prophecies referring to the Savior, or Messiah, if you will) that were fulfilled. The authors of the books containing the biblical prophecies were deceased hundreds (and for some thousands) of years before the time of Christ!!!

Here’s over 300 Messianic Prophecies regarding Christ with the Old Testament reference on the right and the New Testament reference on the left:

  48. *Old Testament reference on the left and New Testament reference on the right

  49. I’m failing to get through to you aren’t I?

it would be best if you steped out of your religion for a moment and look at what you’re proposing.

God created man with free will. Why then would he punish man for using free will to explore other options such as buddist and taoist enlightenment? and what of the man that came before monotheism was practiced are you to say they are all dead for worshiping many gods? how can you prove their gods wern’t real and your is besides bible scripture which was writen by men.

how can you say that we shouldn’t be worshiping posidon, or here, or athena still? what about thor and odin? or anubis and osiris?

and what of the native americans on the other side of the world when christ was around, why, if he is the son of god, did he not reserect in mesoamerica and show them your true path?

step outside of christianity of a second and look at the thousands of religions practiced in the world, who are you to say that only christianity can gain one access to heaven and the rest must burn in hell for practicing free will?

  50. I am bewildered at how someone can completely give up on thinking as you have done McSpank. You have no need for a brain at all. You believe things for which there is absolutely no evidence and reject theories that are overwhelmingly supported by evidence. Your mind has been turned inside out by the brain virus that has control of you. Good luck and I hope that your journey back to the Dark Ages is a happy one for you. Good bye.

  51. Free will is great. And that’s just it-FREE WILL. That means we can do whatever the crap we want!!! God gave us this freedom. But he also gave commandments so those that truly love Him would follow them, but those who desired not to could do so.

The Native Americans were exposed to the gospel of Christ eventually. In Proverbs 3:5 it says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lead not unto your own understanding.” That’s what it boils down. I don’t care if you’re going to say he wrote that for political power-shut it!

And Anubis and Osiris were all false gods-they weren’t neccessary fake-they’re demons of deception. And Christ is the only way; free will ensures those who are devout will enter heaven and those who are self-absorbed and ignorant (you) will not.

Bye Nuts…if Hillary gets elected, then be looking forward to your “Dark Age”

  52. McSpankerton, that was good, but what does Hillary have to do with stem cells?
