Thanks to our Veterans and Troops

This is for the American veterans and troops. Whether readers agree with the present war or not, we can lay aside differing opinions for a moment and thank each person in the armed forces who comes across this site to let them know that we appreciate their personal service and sacrifice. And, being a mom, I’ll add that if you don’t have something good to say here, don’t say anything.
This post is not about the war.
It is not about Iraq.
It is not about any administration.
This post is about our Veterans and Troops, without whom we would not have the freedoms we too often take for granted.
Thank-you, Servicemen and women.

  1. Finally, Thank you Joy, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Actually I can not tell you how much your commentary means to me.
Just trust my words that it made my day.
    Again, Thank you

  2. Anyone else find it insteresting many people (including myself, I must admit) are so quick to thank soldiers, but we’re not so quick to thank the police, the IRS, senators, etc.? In fact, we have utter hatred and contempt for the very people that keep this nation together, much like soldiers do. Namely, law enforcement, judges, lawyers, auditors, social workers, so on and so forth. They all perform a paid duty they chose to do and they all serve a greater purpose.

  3. There is a huge difference between our police and our soldiers, do not think for even one second that the lives of the Police, the IRS the Senators, etc are in anyway even close to the lives of those over in Iraq. It is clear to me you have not been there, and have not the slightest idea of what it is like
I stand by my words, and the words of Joy

  4. K. Marx. You make an interesting observation. Soldiers are government employees carrying out their chosen profession and being paid accordingly for their work. I feel bad for the “Reservists” who were planning to get a college education in return for training 1 weekend per month (according to the advertisement). Many of them never anticipated spending 18 months at war in the middle east. Do we not have enough full-time professional soldiers to do the job? We spend more on our war machine than all other countries in the world combined and we can’t field a full-time army to take on a couple of thousand insurgents who are living like rats in caves? I believe that the difficulties we are having in Afghanistan and Iraq reveal fundamental weaknesses in our military. Unfortunately, most wars in our future will probably resemble the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. We roll over them initially and then can’t finish the job. Our military is not designed to fight terroists, occupy countries, or control insurgencies. Is a military that was designed for the conventional warfare of yesteryear now obsolete? It would seem so to me.

  5. Why do we continue to maintain a nuclear arsenal that we could not possibly consider using under any circumstances? Our nuclear weapons costs taxpayers tens of billions of dollars a year to service (plutonium triggers, for one thing, oxidize rapidly and must be replaced frequently - at great expense). If we ever used the damned things it would mean certain suicide for our country. When it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Bush wants to develop more nuclear weapons systems that struck me as totally irrational. And when we tell other countries that they shouldn’t build nuclear weapons while we continue to maintain and develop our arsenal, isn’t that like a doctor who chain smokes telling a patient that the patient should stop smoking. Certainly our credibility on the issue is questionable at best.

  6. Suzanne; re: #3.
My question was about the reasoning behind the distinction. If someone claims, “A is greater than B,” surely the most reasonable reply would be: “I understand. But why is A greater than B?”
Moreover, consider not resorting to ad hominem attacks. I passed fourth grade; I don’t fall for those logical fallacies.

  7. I SAID we can lay down our differing opinions and thank these individuals…as in, the people, reservist, national guard, or otherwise, who voluntarily or otherwise are presently serving our country or have served our country in this capacity. And this is in no way to minimize the importance of any public servant, I just want to thank the armed services vets at this time.

    THANK-YOU.

I guess I must go back to my other answer I just gave you in reference to the Oath,
If you have not been in the Military, and have not been is a situtation such as Iraq. Then I do not think I can explain. I am not resorting to ad hominem attacks, in addition, I think you have gone a lot further than fourth grade.
In this statement, use your higher education and answer this question and also the Oath question yourself, otherwise send me an email

PS I do not have or give hominem attacks,
I was not in amyway trying to put you down.
Just some things ture but can not be explained on a place like this site.

  9. Two words: Gunner Palace.
Phenomenal documentary about the lives of soldiers serving in the heart of Baghdad. Soldiers are the stars of the movie and tell their own stories in their own words. See it.

  10. Lefty… I usually do not agree with leftists but you’re right. Our military is designed to fight conventional warfare ( you know, against another country in uniform like all wars were fought in the history of mankind ) not this street to street insurgent fighting. However I do believe that our military, considering it is the greatest fighting force in the world, will evolve and adapt to the situation. Just give the geniuses some time, they’ll think of something.

  11. House hearings on Downing Street Memos will be televised on CSPAN on Thursday. A case is also being prepared for presentation to the Senate. Iraq is Bush’s war. Period. It has been his obsession since the 1990s. A steady stream of pre-war intelligence info is being leaked from Great Britian now (thank you Deepthroat II, whoever you are) that contradicts what Bush told us in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq: seven new memos were leaked and verified by three different sources yesterday. Now Bush has some serious damned explaining to do. I hope we can drive a political stake through his cold black heart. Then maybe our nation can begin to heal and start to work our way out of this national nightmare.

  12. To comment 10
Gee, what did you write? That our military is designed to fight conventional warfare, (uniforms etc, etc, and more bull etc) like all wars were fought in the history of mankind. WHAT?
You are again assuming all wars starting with the beginning of man - each side wore their own uniform, the war was conducted in a conventional manner, (I guess like the English did with the Scottish?) (Watch the movie Braveheart).
    - - not this street to street insurgent fighting. WHAT? Were you in Vietnam? Do you know anyone who was in Vietnam? Were you in WW II? Have you ever heard of the underground resistance?
Have you been in Israel during any of its wars?
Have you even witness first hand a war of any kind?
Do you honestly think that our military is not trained to fight this type of war?
Do you honestly believe, that like when the English and the 13 states were at war, and the British had their Bright Red uniforms, that the Americans had on bright blue?
Most did not have uniforms, and the British were open targets with their conventional uniforms.
Girl, you got a lot of leaning to do.
I have seen first hand war, I know war, you do not.

  13. I really appricate all the support. The only thing I really have to say about it is we are kicking the shit out of them. Our military is very much able to fight this war. We have been given supperior fire power and leadership. There is just way more insurgents than Americans think. There is no way you could possibly understand what is going on here unless you’re here. I blame the media for the common misconception for what’s going on here. People that have no idea what war is all about and for the most part oppose the war are the people telling America what is going on. I am a soldier. I will engage and destroy any enemy of the United States. Leave the fighting to me and stay out of my way and don’t try to explain it. All of the reservists and guard soldiers knew that they had a chance to deploy. It is right there in the contract. They wanted the benefits and now it’s time to pay the piper. They should be proud that they have the opportunity to take a stand and say that September Eleventh will never happen again.

  14. First time here and first I would like to thank Buck and all for providing this sound-off page.

I have read with extreme interest the above post from many.I agree with many points of opinions and likewise, laugh at others that talk of things that they really have little knowledge of. First I must say I will not intend to be left/right/dem/rep/ind.It is true that the war/wars that our troops are currently engaged in, breaches new ground, compared to past wars, from WW1,2,Korea,Vietnam,etc.We have that awesome technology by air to put any size bomb we choose(hot-water bottle size to multi ton)onto a targeted area the size of most peoples bedroom. We have tanks(A1A-Abrams)that can do basically the same on the ground from 5-6 miles away. And most importantly we have the best equipped, high tech soldiers on the planet(night vision/gps/etc. We have a awesome array of special forces, that most could not comprehend their abilities(Navy Seals/Gbs/Snipers/Airborne Rangers/Air Force Combat Control/Marine Corp.Recon/and much more.We can fight any kind of war be it ground/air or sea.It may seem to many that our wheels are spinning in Iraq but fighting insurgents is task difficult task to put it mildly. Many walk amoung the civilians in sheeps cloth and they are really a wolf 5 minutes later.Unless we surprise them, they do not come out and fight bravely, because they know that they stand 0 chance against our troops. They like to set booby traps with explosives, sniper a soldier from afar.

We will continue to lose soldiers(sadly)but our soldiers are doing what this country ask of them, for what ever reason.Whether we agree or disagree with whether we should or should not be there, bottom line is our men and women in the armed forces (past& present) deserve our unyielding support because they are the ones that give us freedom and liberty.
