It is definately a real letter, written by a real Army officer. #2 If you read the entire account the officer who wrote the letter doesn't recant anything he said. He is just covering his but because his superiors came down on him. You don't need this letter to know that Obama had only his political interests in mind during his overseas trip. His biggest snub is refusing to acknowledge that the surge has been successful and that American troops, including Petraeus, are largely responsible. I read the Snopes account of this email. #1.
