The main stream media and many in the blososphre give Paul a pass because “he can’t win.”, however, a fervent and sophisticated organization along with an angry electorate has moved Ron Paul into serious contender status in all the early primaries. It’s time to look seriously at Ron Paul and what he believes.
Ron Paul is a RINO, or Republican in Name Only. But instead of leaning left like many RINO’s Paul is on the extreme of the other end, a libertarian. You know how your crazy old uncle, and maybe even you, might say something like, “I say we bring all our troops home, cut off all foreign aid and let those other countries do whatever they want to do.” Well that sounds great, in theory, but in practice, the world is more complicated than that kind of black and white thinking. Ron Paul and libertarians are just that, black and white. Good and Bad, Wrong and Right.
In the most recent debate, Paul was taken to task by Michelle Bachman for his statements about Iran. In essence, Ron Paul would stop all of our efforts to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear program and nuclear weapons and let them do whatever they want. Bachman, rightly so, said that was dangerous. Yes, Ron Paul wants to get the government “back down to size”, but his downsizing can also weaken us around the world and at home. Iran has vowed to wipe Israel off the map. They call America the great Satan. Do you think they would hesitate to use a nuclear weapon to defeat Israel and their avowed enemy the United States. Ron Paul doesn’t think it’s worth worrying about.
I will admit, I have some libertarian leaning views. I think the Fed should be restructured, not abolished. I think the income tax should be restructured, not abolished. I think marijuana should be legal. Cocain, meth, heroin…NO, NO, NO. There is a difference. I think the Federal government should be smaller and less powerful.
But on the reality side, we can’t withdraw from the world and go back to the federal government of pre-cival war days. Times change. Society changes. Technology and lifestyles change and our system of governing has to change with it, but in the context of our constitution.
Ron Paul has some great ideas, but he is the most radical and extreme of any candidate in the Republican primary. If you want a guaranteed loss for Republicans and conservatism in 2012, then vote for Ron Paul. Crazy Uncle Ron will not only run off any moderates, he’ll lose a lot of Republican’s too.

Ron Pail is the most conservative, anti-liberal, sane politician out there. His policies are based on the constitution, respect of other people’s liberties, common sense and cause-and-effect reasoning. If you don’t start poking the hornet’s nest, the hornets won’t come after you. It’s very simple. Sticking your nose in somebody else’s business is never a good idea and if you’re going to go around looking for a fight, you usually will get one. As a conservative, I am sure you have many examples of liberals trying to find a problem where one does not exist and incite arguing and fighting where there is no need. Ron Paul’s motto could be “live and let live.”
starting another unnecessary war sounds like a great idea…lets keep taking advice from the neo-cons who have never been right about anything and who don’t care about the troops that they hide behind.
why not start another war to stress a military that is already stressed beyond its limits. let ask more from the military when they are in the midst of a mental health crisis.
i find it ironic but not surprising that the people who have never served in the military in their lives are the one’s championing more war. these neo-cons ask others to sacrifice for their wrong ideas and take no blame when things go predictably wrong.
but that is the mo of the republican party…they push for ideas that ask the most from those who have the least and put none other own gifts in to help. they do nothing to help whether it be serving in the military or helping balance the budget but make the troops and the 99% pay the price. republicans are becoming more and more selfish and their one-sided greed/laziness is unamerican.
@Buck – And why has Iran been so anti-American since the shah was ousted? Its because the CIA instigated an overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected president because he was trying to stop the British from ripping them off. Then they installed the shah, who was widely unpopular there. The Iranians remembered what we did then, and having troops stationed in Muslim holy lands and bombing a multitude of Middle Eastern countries over the past few decades only make matters worse. I can defintely see why the Iranians would be mad at us. Also, Ahmadinejad did not say he wanted to wipe Israel off the face of the earth, that was a poorly misinterpreted translation. He actually said he wants to remove the regime of Israel. Also, Iran isn’t THAT stupid, they aren’t going to nuke Israel, because then the US or Israel (if their missile defense systems worked) would blow them out of existence. Everybody seems to get worked up about Iran getting nukes when Pakistan has plenty for a while, and they could probably get their hands on a rogue Soviet-era nuke anyways. And to think that 1 Iranian nuke poses a significant threat to 10,000+ American nukes is ludicrous. If Iran makes direct aggressive actions to the US or Israel, then by all means the US should retaliate. But I do not believe the US should be so hasty to be such an aggressor.
Daniel,
Iran is a threat. They have been the chief state sponsor of terrorism since the Shah was ousted. They have, as a central and motivating tennant of their theocracy the complete destruction of Israel and the conversion to Islam or death of all western infidels. Those are not my suppositions, that’s what they say.
Ron Paul’s libertarianism basically states that a strong defense is one of the few legitimate powers of the federal government. I agree with that, but the problem is, the horse is already out of the barn. The reason his foreign policy is dangerous is that whether we like it or not, America IS the world’s policeman. Without our direct intervention, individual rights and freedom will be trampled all over the world. The only thing needed for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing. It was true prior to WW II and it’s true today. I admire Ron Paul’s America First stance, but the void left by America pulling back from every corner of the world will be filled by something. Are you willing to gamble on who or what that might be?
You say his foreign policy is dangerous, but why is that so? I think people need to look at the motives of their arguments when they say things like that.
We talked about fear-mongering when we went into Iraq and then we talked about it when the Dems were convincing the people to vote for them in the mid-terms. This is just more of that. There is no real threat from Iran. Anyone telling you that there is a threat from Iran is simply demagoguing. They are speaking in platitudes.
Ron Paul’s foreign policy isn’t to do nothing when a legitimate threat arises….it is to quit manufacturing threats for ourselves. Blowback IS a legitimate concept and exists in reality. Our constant meddling in sovereign countries and their affairs creates enemies all over the world. Sure, we have every right to retaliate when someone strikes us, but we have a significant moral issue if we don’t recognize their original strike as retaliatory against our meddling.
Iran doesn’t hate us because of Muslim extremism. That is just the tool their hatred has used to stir the pot. It is the same as the crusades. Nobody that looks at the actual message of Christ could rationalize those actions, but the fear and hatred were already in place, so they used religion to stir up the passion necessary to go to war.
All of the other Republican candidates are doing the same.
Economically it isn’t even a contest. Ron Paul kicks the crap out of every other candidate.
i’m surprised you support legalizing marijuana…we agree on at least one thing.
if ron paul is crazy for republicans, then he needs to be institutionalized because republicans are becoming radical.
just look at what republicans are doing to the payroll tax cut…obstructing for no other reason besides politics. why are republicans not supporting a tax cut? their reasoning is insane and america is finally calling them out. they keep demanding that democrats give consessions, never move on their positions…then blame democrats for not caving enough.
this behavior will get republicans ousted from congress and they will lose the presidential election. they have proven that they cannot lead and are acting un-american.
